Qualifications

Qualifications represent the certifications and competencies your members hold. Examples in an Australian fire-service context include Apply First Aid (HLTAID011), Operate a Pump (PUAFIR210), or Operate Communications Equipment (PUASAR001).

Global vs department qualifications

Two types exist:

  • Global — visible to every department. Maintained by the Firecrest team, not by individual officers. Common nationwide units of competency (HLTAID, PUA) typically live here.
  • Department-scoped ("Local" in the UI) — visible only to your department. Officers manage these themselves. Use for brigade-specific competencies or qualifications that don't fit a national framework.

You can tell them apart in the Admin → Qualifications list under the Scope column. Only Local qualifications have an Edit button — global ones are read-only.

Qualification detail page

Click any qualification's name in the list to open its detail page. You'll see:

  • The basic metadata (code, expiry months, scope).
  • Linked SMPs — every SMP that uses this qualification, with its annual hours requirement. Useful for sanity-checking that the right SMPs are pointing at the right qualification.
  • Members (N) — every active member in your brigade who holds this qualification, with their rank, the date they attained it, and an expiry badge (Expired / Expiring / plain date / if it never expires).

This is the quickest way to answer "how many of us are current in BA?" — open the qualification, scan the Members table for any Expired or Expiring badges.

Creating a qualification

Click + New Qualification. Fill in:

  • Name — human-readable, e.g. Operate Breathing Apparatus.
  • Qualification Code — the formal code if there is one (e.g. PUAFIR207). Free-text — use any convention that suits your brigade if no formal code exists.
  • Expiry (months) — how long the qualification stays current after the attained date. Leave blank if it never expires. Typical examples:
    • First aid: 36 months (3 years)
    • CPR: 12 months (1 year)
    • Most fire-service units: 24 months (2 years)

Click Create Qualification to save.

Editing or deleting

Click Edit on the row. You can change any field or delete the qualification entirely.

Deleting is destructive

Deleting a qualification also removes:

  • Every member's record of holding it
  • Every SMP linked to it

For most cases you probably want to keep historical qualifications around. Only delete if you created one in error.

Assigning qualifications to members

Done from each member's page, not from this list. See Members → Adding qualifications.

Expiry tracking

Once a qualification has an attained date on a member's record:

  • Expiry = attained_date + expiry_months
  • The member's profile and reports show an expiry badge:
    • Expired — past expiry date
    • Expiring — within 90 days of expiry
    • (No badge) — more than 90 days remaining

The Qualification Expiry report groups everyone's expiring qualifications into <30 / <60 / <90 day buckets — check this monthly.

If a qualification has no expiry months set, expiry tracking is skipped and the report shows Never for it.
